German metalworkers down tools

Thousands of metalworkers in Germany have gone on strike over a pay dispute.

Some 5,000 workers who make Audi vehicles at two plants are among those who have joined the action.

The unions are demanding an eight percent pay rise, while employers are offering 2.9 percent.

One striker said: “Everything is more expensive,” says this worker. “The cost of living, electricity, gas, food. Savings are needed everywhere. That’s why we should have a bigger slice of the cake. That’s why we’re striking.”

The strike is set to spread on Monday if no agreement is found.

The unions calling the industrial action represent some 3.6 million metalworkers in Germany.
