A 21-year-old man has been jailed for 30 years for the rape and murder of a British exchange student in Italy last November.
Prosecutors demanded a life sentence for Rudy Guede, from Ivory Coast, but he opted for a fast-track hearing, which allows suspects to serve less time if convicted.
The judge also ordered that 21-year-old American student Amanda Knox stand trial for murder in December, along with her former boyfriend, Italian national Raffaele Sollecito. Both say they are innocent.
21-year-old Meredith Kercher, from London, was studying in the university city of Perugia. Her partly-clothed body was found in the bedroom of a house she shared with Amanda Knox. She had been stabbed in the neck.
The case has riveted Italians and received widespread coverage in the British and American press.
Prosecutors claim Meredith was killed as part of a bungled sex game involving the other three.
Knox and Sollecito have been held in jail since shortly after the murder. A decision on their request for house arrest is due in the next few days.
