Deadly earthquake rocks Pakistan

world news

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 has hit south-western Pakistan and dozens of people have been reported dead.

The epicentre was 70 kilometres north of Quetta in the province of Baluchistan near the border with Afghanistan.

At least 80 people have been reported dead and officials say they expect the toll to rise significantly.

Many were injured in the panic or when the mud walls of dwellings collapsed.

Hundreds of buildings are said to have been flattened by the tremor, which struck just before dawn.

Quetta itself was almost completely destroyed and around 30,000 people killed in an earthquake in 1935.
