Georgian Regional Governor Giorgi Mebonia has been assassinated near the de facto border with the breakaway region of Abkhazia. Three Georgian policemen were also injured in the attack. Mebonia was on a routine patrol with EU observers who are monitoring the region.
Tensions have been increasing here and in South Ossetia with Georgia saying Russia has deployed 2,000 more troops in South Ossetia
Witnesses said a landmine exploded before bullets started to fly and smoke could be seen
billowing some distance away. The Georgians say the shots came from the Russian side, claims Moscow denies. The murder of Governor Mebonia has plunged the region into fears of more violence to come.
