A political ceasefire over the credit crunch has come to an abrupt end in Britain, with main opposition leader David Cameron slamming the government’s economic record.

His attack comes despite the fact that Cameron’s Conservatives supported Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s bank rescue package.

“Some people think that this decision, to support recapitalisation, means that we somehow now subscribe to the government’s entire economic policy and doctrine. Let me make it crystal clear, we do not,” Cameron said in London.

“This crisis has highlighted just how mistaken Labour’s economic policy has been.”

Britain’s finance minister for a decade, Brown rejects any suggestion that his ruling Labour Party is to blame for the economic downturn.

“I am determined to work with everybody who wants to, to make sure that we, as a nation, come through the difficult times caused by events outside our control in the world economy,” he said.

Brown’s popularity has risen over his handling of the crisis although the Conservatives remain ahead in the opinion polls.
