McCain needs sure shot in final TV duel

The final TV showdown between the US presidential candidates takes place tonight, with the debate being portrayed as win or bust for Republican John McCain. His Democrat rival, Barack Obama, has a healthy lead in the polls- apparently a backlash against the Republicans over the financial crisis.

Ahead of the encounter Obama urged greater surveillance of US banks. “If we are just giving them money, but we are not making sure that they are curbing some of the excessive risks that got us into this mess in the first place, then we are just continuing the same philosophy that has failed the American people so badly,” he said.

McCain has tried to regain ground by focusing on tax cuts. He said: “We will reduce the federal business tax rate from 35 percent, the second highest in the world, to 25 percent. I am also proposing today that for those who are between jobs, we eliminate all taxes on unemployment benefits.” America has just three weeks to decide.
