At least 12 dead after Chechnya earthquake

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale has left at least 12 people dead and more than 100 injured in the Russian republic of Chechnya.

Electricity has been cut off to tens of thousands of people and roads are said to have been badly damaged near the epicentre around 40 kilometres east of the Chechen capital, Grozny.

Officials say the death toll could rise.
