Nearly 200 people are now thought to have been killed in a mass stampede at a Hindu temple in western India. It is reported overcrowding is to blame for the incident in the city of Jodhpur in Rajasthan – a popular tourist destination. Thousands of people had gathered in the temple for the Hindu festival of Navratra.

It is understood the stampede occurred when security barriers to control access to the temple collapsed. More than a 150 people were injured, many seriously. Such accidents are not uncommon in temples in India where large crowds congregate in small areas lacking security facilities.
