The attack on the Marriott hotel has shocked Pakistan, a country already battered by a surge in violence. Internal security has deteriorated rapidly recently, with the message that terrorists can strike anywhere, at any time.

The bombing came just hours after Pakistan’s new President condemned the rising violence. Its timing cannot be a coincidence. Asif Ali Zardari denounced the terrorists as a cancer sweeping the country, and called for renewed efforts to stamp them out.
