Italian police working with the FBI have busted drug rings in Europe and north and Latin America, making 200 arrests.
Six in New York and eight in Italy are accused of leading the operations. The others are suspected of belonging to the Mexico-based Gulf cartel.
In Calabria arrests were made of suspected members of a powerful ‘Ndrangheta clan. Tens of millions of euros in cash were recovered.
Since “Operation Solaire” began police say 16 tonnes of cocaine have been seized, and a key piece in the puzzle was the arrest in Canada of Giuseppe Coluccio in August, one of Italy’s 30 most wanted men.
The N’drangheta is estimated by some to turn over 44 billion euros a year, or three per cent of Italy’s gross domestic product.
