The attacks outside the US embassy represent an escalation in violence in Yemen against western targets. More worrying was the way in which the car bombings were carried out.
US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said: ‘‘After talking to the security personnel the attack bears all the hallmarks of an al Qaeda attack where you have multiple vehicle-borne devices, along with personnel on foot, seemingly in an attempt to breach the perimeter and again try to inflict further damage and loss of life.”
While Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility for this latest strike, it is not the first time attacks have taken place against US targets. In 2000 an al Qaeda suicide attack on the USS Cole killed 17 US military personnel and injured 38.
