A sleepy village in northeastern Poland is at the centre of an incest case that echoes that of Austrian Josef Fritzl.
Amid claims he imprisoned his daughter for six years and raped her repeatedly, a 45-year-old man has been arrested. It is alleged two children were born as a result of the incestuous relationship.
The mother of the young woman, now aged 21, supports her daughter’s allegations. She spoke to reporters at her home in Grodzisk.
“She was in total fear. So was I,” she said.
“She is still afraid of him. Even when he is mentioned, she trembles and tries to hide. He used to say he wanted to listen to music in our daughter’s room to relax. He was closing doors, removing the handle from inside. I could not do anything.”
Police have hospital records for two boys born in 2005 and 2007, both said to have been given up for adoption. They are hoping to trace them to carry out paternity tests.
“We are now determining whether this woman contacted anyone to ask for help,” said police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski.
The Polish case bears similarities to that of Josef Fritzel, who is accused of holding his daughter captive in a soundproofed basement for 24 years, fathering seven children by her.
