Authorities in Haiti say more than 500 people have been killed by Tropical Storm Hanna. As the floods unleashed by its torrential rains begin to recede it is thought the death toll could rise even higher. The bodies of most victims have been found in the port city of Gonaives, where thousands survived by climbing onto rooftops.
The storm is now moving north towards the Carolinas, while Hurricane Ike threatens to wreak havoc in the Bahamas. From then on, Ike’s path is uncertain and authorities are maintaining states of emergency.
Tropical Storm Josephine is churning weakly in Ike’s wake. The trio of storms follow Hurricane Gustav’s rampage through the Caribbean to Louisiana. Ships and planes have begun to arrive with desperately needed aid for Haiti, which has been hit by three deadly storms in less than a month.
