Ukraine’s embattled Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has attempted to stave off the Political crisis in the country. Taking a conciliatory line she urged President Viktor Yushchenko and his party to return to the coalition government. Earlier, Yushchenko threatened to call an election after claiming the country’s government had collapsed. He’s accused Tymoshenko of trying to wreck the ruling coalition by joining forces with rivals.

Yushchenko is attempting to steer the former Soviet republic of 47 million people towards NATO and EU membership. The apparent disintegration comes at a volatile time, just weeks after Russia’s military incursion into Georgia, which also wishes to forge closer ties with the West.
