New Orleans residents barred for another day

In hurricane-hit New Orleans the streets are submerged but most properties remain intact.

Television pictures are the closest most residents will get to their homes for another day at least. Half of New Orleans has no power, and the sewage system is not working.

Shelters across Louisiana remain full. Only emergency workers and business owners will be allowed back into New Orleans today, along with President George Bush who will make a personal visit.

Motorists queueing at roadblocks around the city face at least another 24 hours in their cars. The evacuation order doesn’t end until midnight tonight.

In Cuba an aid operation is underway after it too was battered by Hurricane Gustav. 100,000 homes were damaged or destroyed and half a million people had to be evacuated.
