US presidential candidate, John McCain, has been on the campaign trail with his newly-appointed running mate, Sarah Palin. The addition of the virtually unknown Governor of Alaska to the Republican ticket has certainly grabbed headlines.
And the scheduled start of the Republican convention in Minnesota tomorrow should have ensured many more over the coming week. But the imminent arrival of Hurricane Gustav on American soil could put paid to all that.
McCain has said it would be “inappropriate” to hold what is normally a festive occasion under such circumstances. The event may now be turned into a fund-raiser for those affected by the hurricane’s passage. Palin’s nomination prompted a surge in donations to the Republican campaign.
But the Democrat’s Barack Obama remains slightly ahead, according to latest polls. He has been in Ohio, trying to connect with the area’s white, working-class voters who have eluded him so far.
