Tropical Storm Fay has already made its mark in Florida and it could be heading back to cause further devastation. Falling short of hurricane strength in its passage through the US state, Fay nonetheless spawned a number of tornadoes.
In Brevard County, dozens of homes were damaged. Storm victim Helen Ferragamo said: “I was sitting in my daughter’s room, reading a book, and then all of a sudden, this loud noise came and flying glass and everything started flying around. Everything just went.”
Things could be about to get worse. Forecasters fear the storm could strengthen into a hurricane and boomerang right back into Florida. But, as those living in Florida clean up and brace themselves for another possible visit from Fay, others have already paid a much higher price.
The storm has killed more than 50 people in the Caribbean, most of them in Haiti when a crowded bus was carried away as it tried to cross a river.
