Zambia’s President Levy Mwanawasa has died at a military hospital near Paris hospital aged 59. He had been receiving treatment there since June, when he suffered a stroke while attending an African Union summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Mwanawasa, who was elected in 2001, won praise from western leaders and the International Monetary Fund for launching a major anti-corruption drive and attempting to modernise the economy of Zambia, which is one of the world’s biggest copper producers.
