Beijing’s showpiece Olympic Nest Stadium has today held its first sporting event a week after it hosted the Games’ opening ceremony.
So far all the sporting action has taken place in venues across Beijing and elsewhere but with the track and field events now underway, sportsfans have finally been able to cross the threshold of the Bird’s Nest.
“The stadium inside is magnificent,” said one Brazilian man, “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
What struck one German visitor was the temperature and humidity: “It’s difficult, the heat takes some getting used to. And then there’s the coldness indoors. You need to be prepared to have sweat pouring down your back but once you’re used to it and if you’re wearing the right clothes then it’s ok.”
But as a Croatian man pointed out, the heat is alot easier for those watching than those doing the running.
Tomorrow the Bird’s Nest hosts what is for many the prestige event of the Games: the 100 metres sprint final.
