Leading Georgia’s handling of the conflict, President Mikheil Saakashvili has been meeting those experiencing it first hand.

Having visited a hospital, he travelled to a village on the border with South Ossetia. His offer of a ceasefire remains unheeded by Russia.

Georgia’s president accuses his giant neighbour of launching a military invasion of his country where a state of war has been declared.

The crisis dramatically ups the stakes in a long-running stand off between Russia and Georgia, over Saakashvili’s pro-Western polices and his nation’s drive for NATO membership.
