The confrontation between Russian and Georgian troops has prompted an outpouring of nationalistic fervour in both Tbilisi and Moscow.

Thousands gathered outside the Russian embassy in Georgia to blame Moscow for the fighting, which is looking more and more like all-out war.

In Moscow it was a different story as demonstrators, wrapped in the regional flags of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, rallied outside the Russian ministry in support of the military action.

Occasionally their language was less than eloquent. An angry crowd used profanities to describe Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.
