Ex-US presidential hopeful Edwards admits affair

Former US Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards has admitted cheating on his wife and having an affair.

Press reports of the liason in 2006 were denied during the campaign by Edwards whose wife Elizabeth has terminal cancer.

So what impact will coming clean about his relationship with Rielle Hunter, 42, have on his and his party’s future?

“Selfishly speaking as a Democrat, I am glad that he is not the nominee because I feel like we would not have a chance to win,” said one woman in North Carolina, the state which Edwards represented as a Senator.

“I hope it does not take over the poltiical debate right now and become centre stage and that we can talk about the issues.

“When I saw it online today, I was kind of shocked and flabbergasted. It is too bad,” a man added. “I guess at least he admitted the truth but I guess that writes him off for VP this year.”

Edwards denies fathering his mistress’ child. Before the revelations, he had been widely tipped as a vice presidential running mate for Democratic candidate Barack Obama.
