Bush: attacks on Georgia are "dangerous escalation"

The Georgian leadership’s main ally in the West has said that Russia’s attacks on its neighbour marked a “dangerous escalation” of the crisis.

American President George W. Bush has urged Moscow to halt the bombing. He spoke out as envoys from the US, EU and NATO headed to Georgia, as part of an international delegation, seeking to broker a ceasefire.

“Georgia is a sovereign nation and its territorial integrity must be respected,” Bush said during a trip to the Olympics in Beijing. “We have urged an immediate halt to the violence and a stand down by all troops. The United States is working with our European partners to launch international mediation and with the parties to restart their dialogue. Russia needs to support these efforts so that peace can be restored as quickly as possible.”
