Children among dead in Indian temple stampede

world news

| |

Panic at a Hindu temple has left at least 145 people dead in northern India. Women, and at least 40 children, were also killed in the stampede to get out of the shrine, when guard railings on the hillside path collapsed.

Thousands of worshippers flock to the temple in Himachal Pradesh state every year for a festival of prayer to a Hindu goddess.

Unrest started when roadside railings gave way. Some people thought it was a landslide, and scrambled to get away.

Survivors said the children were trampled to death by the crowds.
