ETA murderer set free after 22 years

A convicted ETA murderer has walked free from prison in Spain. Jose Ignacia de Juana Chaos was sentenced to 3000 years in prison for 25 murders, but he became eligible for parole in 2004 after 18 years.

Then he wrote pro-ETA newspaper articles from his prison cell. He got another 12 years, eventually reduced to three.

He staged hunger strikes in protest at his treatment, one of which won him house arrest.

The Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero came in for heavy criticism for appeasing a terrorist.

“This individual, for the public and this prime minister, has generated an uproara which is perfectly understandable. But we must respect the law,” Zapatero said.

Also, under Spanish law, the released prisoner must pay up to eight million euros in compensation to his victims. He claims he is broke.

The authorities have ordered the seizure of his family flat, bought recently by his wife.
