Ex US Assistant Secretary of state Richard Holbrooke has refuted claims made by Radovan Karadzic. The former Bosnian Serb leader accuses Holbrooke of going back on a deal not to prosecute him at the end of the Bosnian conflict if he disappeared from public life.
Something, Holbrooke denies:
‘‘In June of 1996 I went to Belgrade and negotiated an agreement with Milosevic and two of Karadzic’s henchmen that Karadzic would quit as president of the Serb portion of Bosnia, and as head of his political party immediately, and disappear from public life. He reluctantly signed that agreement without ever coming to the negotiations, but then in order to protect himself, he put out this false story.’‘
Karadzic has said he would have answered charges against him years ago but was afraid for his life.
