Turkish Police have already begun investigating the attacks in Istanbul. Forensic teams moved in to sift through shrapnel and debris soon after the explosion which was heard up to a mile away.
Eyewitnesses said they were still in shock.
“We heard a very powerful explosion and we went out immediately. By the time we got to the scene the police had already secured the area so we couldn’t cross the line, but we saw blood and bodies everywhere. We saw ambulances and people crying and screaming,” said one woman.
“I went deaf from the explosion,” said a man. “I was sitting with my children on a bench eating icecream when it happened.”
Istanbul has become a terror target for Kurdish separatists and extreme Islamist groups.
In November 2003 two huge explosions killed more than sixty people.
