A Palestinian has been shot dead by an Israeli policeman after ramming a mechanical digger into traffic on a busy Jerusalem street. Israeli officials say the driver was a Palestinian from a village in an area of the occupied West Bank that Israel considers part of Jerusalem.
As many as sixteen people were hurt, one seriously, as the digger careered through the streets overturning one car and ramming other vehicles including a bus. Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip praised the attack as a “natural reaction” to what they called, “the crimes of the Israeli occupation.”
The incident is the second such attack in Jerusalem in three weeks. Earlier this month a Palestinian driving a similar vehicle killed three people and injured many more before being shot dead.
After today’s attack, police cordoned off the digger with the slumped body of the driver still inside. The incident took place less than a kilometre from the official residence of Israeli President Shimon Perez who was meeting the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas there.
