Obama meets Iraqi leaders in Baghdad

The US Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama, has met the Iraqi prime minister on his first visit to Baghdad. Obama has made clear his plans to withdraw US combat troops if he wins November’s election.

But Baghdad says the issue was not raised during his talks with Nuri al-Maliki nor any other matter concerning the Iraqi government as Obama does not have any official (government) capacity.

Obama is also due to meet President Jalal Talabani as well as the top US military commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus to discuss his concerns as he did with his counterpart earlier in Afghanistan.

Obama is visiting a series of countries over the next week in an attempt to bolster his foreign policy and security credentials.
