With the holiday season upon us, the European Commission wants consumers to keep an eye out for a new clearer labelling system, due to make an appearance on sunscreen products this summer.
The fresh labels include a new UVA logo or seal on the bottle and a ban on misleading terms such as “sun blocker” or “total protection.”
“People need to have clear information, which is not misleading,” said EU Consumer Protection Commissioner Meglena Kuneva. “So in many ways, the logo “100% protection” is simply not true and people should know and be aware what kind of protection they can rely on from these sun blockers.”
The Commission wants to make it clear that there are serious health risks such as skin cancer linked to insufficient protection from the sun. EU citizens should be aware of the use and effects of sunscreens and make informed choices.
