Leading Polish political figure dies in a car crash

Bronislaw Geremek, considered a major European political figure has been killed in a car crash in his native Poland.
He was 76.

Geremek was one of the founding members in 1976 of the Workers Defence Committee , a group of intellectuals supporting workers struggles which eventually went on to become part of the Solidarity trade union.

From 1997 to 2000 he was Poland’s foreign minister and later served as an MEP in the European Parliament.
