Israeli policemen wounded in Jerusalem shooting

Israeli police say they are treating as a “terrorist attack” a shooting outside the Old City of Jerusalem last night that left two Israeli officers wounded.

One is in a serious condition with a gunshot wound to the head.

Israeli authorities are still looking for what they believe was a lone gunman who fired from within a Muslim cemetary.

The shooting occurred just before midnight at the Lion’s Gate entrance to ancient Jerusalem which lies at the heart of rival Jewish and Muslim claims to the city.

In separate incidents in Jerusalem this year, a Palestinian shot dead eight Jewish seminary students in March, while 10 days ago two Israelis were killed by a Palestinian driving a bulldozer.

Growing tension has led to Israeli calls for tighter security measures on the estimated quarter of a million Palestinians who have residence rights in Jerusalem.
