A 53-year old South Korean tourist has been shot dead by a North Korean soldier after apparently wandering into a military area.
The woman was visiting the Mount Kumgang holiday resort on the northern side of the border between the two countries.
The popular destination has welcomed more than a million South Korean tourists in the last ten years. A fence separates it from a military zone run by North Korea.
The circumstances of the shooting are not clear. South Korea’s Unification Ministry is yet to comment on reports the woman had climbed the fence before dawn this morning.
South Korea will halt all tourism to the resort from tomorrow.
