Officials and work colleagues have paid their respects to three Turkish police officers, shot dead outside the American Consulate in Istanbul yesterday. Police have detained and questioned the suspected driver of the car used in the attack.
They are investigating whether al Qaeda was behind the shoot-out, despite scepticism from security experts who say it was too small scale. It has been revealed that only one of the gunmen had travelled abroad, despite earlier reports that all had received weapons training in Afghanistan.
The father of one of three gunmen, who also died in the shoot-out, had apparently once been imprisoned in an investigation of the militant Lebanese-based group Hezbollah.
Earlier in the day, police arrested four other men for suspected links to the attack, in which three gunmen drove up to the heavily fortified consulate and opened fire at a police checkpoint.
