Iran tests missile capable of striking Israel

Iran has test fired a new missile with a sufficient range to strike Israel. The launch of the ‘Shahab 3’, as reported by Iranian state media, comes a month after Israeli fighter jets took part in an exercise seen as a rehearsal for an attack on Iranian nuclear sites.

Iran said yesterday it would respond to any such attack by striking at Tel Aviv and US interests in the region.

Also yesterday, the US announced new sanctions on Iranian officials and four Iranian companies suspected of links with Iran’s nuclear programme.

Western powers believe Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons, while Tehran insists its nuclear programme is for energy only.

The row has played a key role in pushing up world oil prices.
