Rallies have been held across Turkey in support of two retired army generals arrested on suspicion of planning to overthrow the government. The two men were picked-up along with 19 other alleged plotters last Tuesday. Around 2,000 people attended a protest in Istanbul, chanting anti-government slogans.
The generals are known critics of the government, accusing it of trying to replace Turkey’s secular traditions with its own Islamist agenda. Both deny the accusations against them.
Tuesday’s police swoop came hours before prosecutors gave their case to the country’s constitutional court for closing down the ruling AK Party on the grounds of anti-secular activities.
