Sarkozy denounces "negligence" at army shootings

The French President Nicolas Sarkozy has denounced as “unacceptable negligence” the shooting of civilians at an army open day in Carcassone. At least 16 people, including four young children, were hurt when a soldier opened fire with live ammunition during a military demonstration.

It is still not clear if the soldier knew he was shooting live rounds, or if he had been issued with them by accident. The soldier is being held in custody, while an investigation is carried out. The army said it was 99,9 percent sure it was not a deliberate shooting.
