Germany is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. Pilots of the “chocolate bombers” that kept the city supplied, despite a Soviet blockade, gathered in Frankfurt at the city’s airlift memorial.
Gail Halvorsen, now 87, is perhaps the best known of all the pilots. Early in the airlift he shared two pieces of chewing gum with some children and saw how they sniffed the wrappers for a hint of flavour. He flew back the next day and dropped chocolate using handkerchiefs as parachutes.
