The highest structure in Jerusalem is due to be inaugurated at a glittering ceremony this evening. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is expected to lead the dignitaries at the official opening of the 42 million euro “Bridge of Strings”.
The curving span is suspended from 66 cables hung from the 118 metre mast. There is a pedestrian walkway on its southern side explains architect Santiago Calatrava: “This bridge is in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and this has made the bridge, in my opinion, significant. On the other side, it is also a bridge which has overcome real technical challenges like its span and the curve and having to transport delicate systems like the light railway.”
The four thousand tonne structue is scheduled to carry the Jerusalem’s new light rail transport system over the busy entrance to the city. Observers predict it will come to symbolise a new, modern gateway to the Holy City.
