Sarkozy says Palestinian state is French priority

Nicolas Sarkozy has said the creation of a Palestinian state is a priority for France.

Visiting his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem, the French President repeated a request made to the Israeli parliament yesterday: an end to the building of Israeli settlements on Palestianian land. He told a press conference:

“What will guarantee the survival and security of the State of Israel, to which I am committed and which is the political battle of my whole life, is the creation of a Palestinian state. It would have democratic, modern boundaries with men like Mahmoud Abbas who are driven by votes and not weapons. There will be only one authority to maintain security, the Palestinian army, and not the militiamen of a band of terrorists.”

Sarkozy repeated to Abbas what he had told the Knesset, that the injustice to the Jewish people will not be solved by injustice to the Palestinian people.
