European stocks finished around 1% lower on Tuesday, pushed down by worries over the US economy as new figures showing that consumer confidence there fell to a 16-year low in June.

However indexes had been much lower and trimmed their losses when recently hammered banks, including Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and BNP Paribas, recovered minutes before the closing bell.

Higher oil prices hit the shares of carmakers, airlines and retailers while UK homebuilders declined as mortgage approvals in Britain fell to their lowest level in over a decade.
