More than 800 missing in Philippine ferry tragedy

There is still no real news as to the fate of the nearly 850 passengers and crew of the ferry that sank in the Philippines on Sunday.

The numbers have risen after fresh data was released by the ship’s owners, and few survivors have been found until now, with desperate families gathering for news but gaining little comfort in the confusion.

The Philippines have been battered by Typhoon Fengshen since Friday.

“They should not have let that ship sail because there was a typhoon coming. How can they do that? They won’t even give out information on what happened”, said one distraught woman waiting for news.

The ferry went down just three kilometres from the coast, but rescuers struggled in rough seas. They were unable to get through for several hours after the alarm was raised.

Elsewhere, nearly 230 people have been killed by the high winds and floods, particularly in Iloilo province, where many roads are cut by landslides and entire communities have been submerged. Locals there are describing it as the worst disaster in their history.
