Al Gore knows what it is like to lose an American election, and he is determined to make sure it does not happen to Barack Obama. The former vice-president has thrown his considerable weight behind his Democratic colleague, saying America cannot afford John McCain: “After eight years of incompetence, neglect and failure, we need change. After eight years in which our constitution has been dishonoured and disrespected, we need change.”
Gore remained neutral as Obama fought Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination – he was a key member of Bill Clinton’s White House team – but now the climate change superstar is backing the candidate of political change.
McCain is already training his weapons on Obama, concentrating on his lack of foreign policy experience, particularly over Iraq: “I hope that Senator Obama who is now closing in on his 900th day since he visited Iraq. I urge him to meet the foreign minister of Iraq, and more importantly, I ask him to request a meeting with General Petraeus, to sit down and get his assessment of the military situation.”
McCain has waited months to know his opponent in the fight for the White House. The battle has only just begun.
