Washington has given its backing to Lebanon’s new president. The US Secretary of State met President Michel Suleiman at his palace near Beirut. This after an agreement was struck last month to resolve a showdown between the Western-backed government and the Hezbollah-led opposition.
Condoleezza Rice said: “This was an agreement that I think serves the interests of the Lebanese people, and since it serves the interests of the Lebanese people, it serves the interests of the US.”
Rice is the highest ranking US official to meet President Suleiman since he was elected last month. His appointment came after a Qatar-brokered deal gave the opposition veto power in a national unity government, and ended months of political paralysis in Lebanon.
