Expo 2008 is being inaugurated in the Spanish city of Zaragoza later today with the theme of Water and Sustainable Development. The recent rain in Spain has slightly dampened the mood. A spectators’ area was flooded after a river overflowed. But that will not prevent a spectacular opening ceremony tonight with King Juan Carlos among the VIPs in attendance.
The exhibition tackles issues such as climate change and the wide gap between rich and poor nations accessing clean water supplies. Organisers hope to highlight the local and global challenges surrounding such an essential resource. While some have already had a sneak preview at a dress rehearsal, it is a drop in the ocean compared to the flood of visitors expected over the next three months. More than 100 countries from all over the world are going with the flow, giving their take on the subject.
