At least 12 people have been killed by two explosions at a train station east of the Algerian capital. Two bombs went off, minutes apart, in the town of Beni Amrane, 50 kilometres from Algiers.

The first bomb killed a French engineer and his Algerian driver as they were leaving the station. The second device killed a group of soldiers and firefighters as they arrived at the scene.

The factory in the town of Lakhdaria where the engineer worked was targeted last September in an attack claimed by al Qaeda.
