Security guards have exchanged fire with a man trying to enter the house of the Prime Minister of Kosovo. Hashim Thaci was not at home when the man was spotted on his balcony at around midnight last night. Thaci’s wife and son were inside but they were not hurt.

The government has now stepped up security for Mr Thaci and his ministers describing the incident as very serious. Thaci, a former commander in the Kosovo Liberation army, has been Prime Minister since January. The former Serb province declared unilateral independance shortly after he took over.

Police believe the potential intruder, who ran off, was injured in the shoot out.
