The fans are ready, and so are the Swiss authorities, for the start of Euro 2008 tonight, after years of preparation. The Czech republic will play the co-hosts in Basel.
“The Czechs will win because we are the best,” shouted one excited fan. “No!” said a young Swiss supporter. “We are going to beat them two-nil.”
Even the unseasonal rain has not dampened spirits.
Geneva is also expecting a party tonight. Portugal will play Turkey there, no doubt cheered on by the city’s large Portuguese community. It’s been a rather wet wait on campgrounds specially set up for the occasion.
So sightseeing is off, but few in Switzerland are focussed on anything other than some imminent world class football.
