Chinese soldiers are battling to prevent a potentially devastating flood disaster as a lake formed by the recent earthquake threatens to overflow. They are using dynamite to clear rubble away to allow some of the water to run off before heavy rains set in. It is a huge operation and, as with much of the relief effort up to now, time is against them. The lake is one of many that were formed by the quake that struck Sichuan province two weeks ago.
More than 65,000 people are known to have died but that number seems certain to grow with 30,000 still missing. The harsh conditions for survivors could also add to the toll.
President Hu Jintao and his government have maintained a high profile since the earthquake struck. A televised visit to a factory making shelters was his latest attempt to reassure the many thousands of homeless that the authorities are doing all they can.
