UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has visited the epicentre of China’s devastating earthquake. His visit coincides with Premier Wen Jiabao’s announcement that the death toll from the 7.9- magnitude quake could rise to 80,000. Wen’s estimate indicates that the authorities are giving up hope of finding most of the 30,00 listed as missing.
Ban, who arrived in China after visiting cyclone-striken Myanmar, vowed the UN would help with reconstruction and was waiting for China’s assessment of what it needed. Relief workers are in a battle to get tents, food and medical supplies to those displaced.
